Illumination: a directional filter of texture?

چکیده
This paper uses theory, simulation, and laboratory experiment, to show that directional illumination, used during the image acquisition process, acts as a directional filter of three dimensional texture. It is shown that the directional characteristics of image texture are not intrinsic to the physical texture being imaged, as they are affected by the direction of the illumination. This result has important implications for texture classification schemes: as many use directional characteristics for discrimination purposes. Variation of illuminant direction is shown to significantly affect a common texture measure : the Laws' L5E5 operator [1]. 1. Introduction Texture classification normally involves three processes. First, the subject texture must be illuminated and its image acquired. Second, feature operators are applied to the digitised image to produce a set of feature images. It is these images that provide the numerical descriptions of the textures. Third, a set of discriminant rules (for instance, a set of statistically derived discriminant functions) are applied to classify the image into texture classes.

Directional MAP to Adaptive Edge Detection by using Variograms
In this study, we suggest a new approach to the detection of edge orientation in order to guide a choice of the appropriate directional filter. This approach aims at analysing variograms properties such as the directionality, the renewal period of texture pattern and size of objet. The use of variograms enable to define directional MAP and to determine the edge orientation of the object in orde...
متن کاملMultiple-cue Illumination Estimation in Textured Scenes
In this paper, we present a method that integrates cues from shading, shadow and specular reflections for estimating directional illumination in a textured scene. Texture poses a problem for lighting estimation, since texture edges can be mistaken for changes in illumination condition, and unknown variations in albedo make reflectance model fitting inpractical. Unlike previous works which all a...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Approach to Rough Texture Compression and Rendering
Rough textures describe a general visual appearance of realworld materials with regard to view and illumination directions. As the massive size and dimensionality of such representations is a main limitation of their broader use, efficient parameterization and compression methods are needed. Our method is based on estimating the joint probability density of the included nine spatial, directiona...

In this paper, we propose an efficient hybrid Particle Filter (PF) algorithm for video tracking by employing a genetic algorithm to solve the sample impoverishment problem. In the presented method, the object to be tracked is selected by a rectangular window inside which a few numbers of particles are scattered. The particles’ weights are calculated based on the similarity between feature vecto...

In this paper, we propose a binary nonsubsampled contourlet transform (B-NSCT) based illumination robust face representation. Faces are transformed into multi-scale and multi-directional contour information where the intrinsic geometrical structures are used for charac...
